United Cargo Opens New State-of-the-Art ORD Facility

02/20/2012
For immediate release:

United Cargo, the world's largest belly carrier, today began operating out of its new state-of-the-art 250,000-square-foot facility at O'Hare Airport in Chicago (ORD). This is the first facility built specifically for the combined cargo operations of the merged United.

The "clean sheet" design of the new facility supports United Cargo's current world-class product line and accommodates potential future growth in products, equipment and technology. There are 53 dock doors and over 213,000 square feet of warehouse space. The building has three positions to accommodate freighter aircraft, two of which can handle the new Boeing 747-8F, and a fourth position will be added by the end of 2012. The cutting-edge security system includes over 100 recording HD cameras linked to United's Skypoint system.

Building features to support special commodities include purpose-built environments for pets, high value items and human remains. Large freezer, cooler and "controlled room temperature" areas support the fastest-growing segment of air cargo's business: shipments requiring temperature-controlled storage. The fully-automated mail sortation system can sort 3,000 packages per hour to as many as 68 different flights simultaneously.

The new facility is environmentally friendly from top to bottom. The vegetative living roof measures 109,000 square feet and is one of the largest "green" roofs in North America. The parking lot and surrounding areas use permeable pavers that reduce storm water pollution. The warehouse features high-efficiency lighting, plumbing and temperature control systems, and many of the fixtures and components were reused or recycled. Forklifts and other ground equipment are electric-powered to minimize emissions.

"All of us at United Cargo at ORD are proud to work at the airport's safest and most modern cargo facility. It's gratifying that our new warehouse was built and is operated with not just the future of United Cargo in mind, but the future of the planet as well," said Rod Zimmerman, United's Senior Manager of Cargo Operations at ORD.

"One of the cornerstones of United's new Working Together culture is to provide co-workers the tools they need to succeed," Zimmerman added. "Our new warehouse is an important tool in our
drive to achieve even higher levels of operational and customer service excellence. Plus, it gives our United and service provider colleagues a much more pleasant environment to work in."

The 37,000 square feet of office space in the new building is home to the cargo industry's leading Sales team. "Our goal is to provide best-in-class sales support by intense focus on and engagement with our customers," said Kevin Romer, Regional Sales Manager of United Cargo's North Central Region. "Teamwork between Sales and Operations is key to keeping the promises United Cargo makes to our customers, and our Sales team is very excited about the benefits the new facility will deliver to our business."

The new building is located one block southwest of United Cargo's former facility. United Cargo's customer hours of operation at ORD continue to be 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
