United Cargo offers optional insurance coverage for your shipments. The following is an overview of that coverage.

If you have any questions regarding this service, please contact or United Cargo for further assistance.

United Cargo also offers the option of Declared Value. The difference between Declared Value and Shipper's Insurance is a claim under Declared Value requires proof that the carrier was negligent, but there is no such requirement for a claim under Shipper's Interest Insurance.

Intra-US Shipper's Insurance

Shipper's Insurance is a contract for insurance coverage which United Airlines has arranged with Insurance Company of North America. Claim payments are not dependent upon carrier negligence in handling the shipment. The shipper must show that the shipment was in good order when tendered, in bad condition when received, and the value. The insurance payment will be for the value of the goods which were lost or damaged provided the insurance purchased was for at least that amount.

Coverage - The policy insures all risks of physical loss or damage from any external cause. Insurance coverage commences at the time the shipment is dispatched from the location named on the air waybill and ends when the shipment is discharged at the location named on the air waybill, including interline shipment.

Exclusions - The policy does not cover loss or damage caused by:

  1. Inherent nature of the shipment;
  2. Loss of market from any cause;
  3. Act or omission of the shipper, owner, or consignee;
  4. Nuclear contamination;
  5. War risks, insurrection, rebellion, revolutions, war or usurped power;
  6. Seizure or destruction under quarantine or customs regulations.

Premium - The insurance premium may be prepaid or collect. The premium rate is $.75 USD for each $100 USD (or fraction thereof) of the insurance amount requested by the shipper, subject to minimum charges of $5.00 USD.

Shipper's Insurance is not offered for the following commodities:

  1. Shipments of Valuable Cargo
  2. Live Animals
  3. Perishables
  4. Human Remains
  5. Those commodities likely to deteriorate or perish due to climate, temperature or exposure, regardless of shipper's release of liability.

NOTE: Insurance coverage is offered on SPD (Small Package) shipments at the above rates. The maximum insurance coverage allowable on SPD shipments is $1,250.00 USD.

Insurance Fee is not subject to federal transportation tax.
